MSS The Technical Voice of the Industry

Who is MSS?

Officially founded in 1924, the Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) of the Valve and Fittings Industry is a non-profit technical association organized for development and improvement of industry, national and international codes and standards for:

  • Valves
  • Valve Actuators
  • New Valve Modifications
  • Actuator Mounting Kits
  • Pipe or Tube Fittings
  • Pipe or Tube Hangers and Supports
  • Springs
  • Flanges
  • Fasteners
  • Spring Washers
  • Associated Seals

MSS Valve and Fitting Standards are in use around the world in a wide variety of facilities, including Nuclear Power Plants, and in virtually every industry, from Waste Water to Oil Refining. MSS currently includes 112 Member Companies that work in 27 Technical Committees to develop and maintain standards that shape the way flow is controlled. MSS is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited standards developer.

As part of our overall ANSI Accreditation and as part of the American National Standards (ANS) process, ANSI accredits and audits the due process-based procedures of MSS. in addition, ANSI accreditation signifies that the procedures used by MSS meet the Institute's requirements for consensus, openness, balance, and due process. MSS Standard Practices identified for ANS processing are approved by an external MSS-sponsored Consensus Committee and subject to a public review process before being finally approved by ANSI as an official ANS.

The primary function of MSS is to provide its members the means to develop engineering standard practices for the use and benefit of the industry and users of its products. The Society, the only organization dedicated solely to the technical needs of the industry, is currently comprised of 27 technical committees to write, revise and reaffirm industry standards.

The MSS Coordinating Committee consists of 11 member representatives associated with different member segments of the Society and is responsible for final review and MSS approval of Standard Practices.

In its leadership role, the Society also contributes to and monitors code and standard development activities worldwide. MSS, in cooperation with other standardizing bodies, appoints representatives to other standardization organization committees to share the views and objectives of the Society.

Standards organizations in which MSS currently participates include, but are not limited to, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Petroleum Institute (API), American Waterworks Association (AWWA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

At the international level, MSS representatives have served as leaders in U.S. delegations in many of the meetings of ISO working groups, subcommittees, and main committees addressing applicable areas of interest.
